Entering a New Era

Sometimes, whether you’re lucky or brave, you find yourself in the right place at the right time. I found myself in the right place one sunny afternoon in late September in the heart of DUMBO. It was this day that I met with the incredible Dr. Renata Khelemsky at Renata Facial Cosmetic Surgery. I had turned 34 a few weeks prior and found that my recent birthday had stirred much contemplation and reflection. The idea of “time” and how to better devote it was suddenly very front of mind. I considered the fact that I had spent over two decades feeling insecure about my oily and often congested skin. Previously unsure of where to turn for answers, I frequently consumed Skincare content via social media. I must assume that most influencers are well-meaning, but it is all too easy to be swept up by the entertaining clips provided by skincare hobbyists. Their advice, while zippy or trendy, simply could not be tailored to my unique needs in the way that Dr. Renata’s expert evaluation could provide. Armed with her help, I resolved to better invest the time and effort that I put into my daily routine.

Beginning

As I get older, I place a higher priority on quality. My previous products were found in drug stores and were a relatively minimal investment of my time and money. I was willing to try anything that claimed to tackle pesky acne and oil, even if it left my skin feeling stripped and damaged. Dr. Renata suggested that I get back to the basics: Cleanse, Exfoliate, and Moisturize. Having grown up in the era in which teen magazines urged us to attack our skin with rocky-textured Apricot scrubs, I appreciated Dr. Renata’s approach: Shed the harsh stuff and instead opt for products that provide balance.

The Process

Cleanse: Soothing Acid-Free Foaming Cleanser

Dr. Renata thought it was best that I incorporate this gentle element into my routine. On days that I wear makeup, I first remove it before reaching for the Soothing cleanser. On wet skin, I work the product into my face and neck. In no time, I can feel the lingering impurities begin to lift. After a rinse and a pat dry, my skin feels calmed. I repeat this step each morning before applying other products or any makeup.

Exfoliate: Exfoliating AHA Pads

I was admittedly nervous about this step, as some previous low-quality salicylic acid pads from the drugstore left my cheeks reddened and raw. Unlike their store-bought counterparts, I was pleased to discover that the texture of Dr. Renata’s pads did not feel rough to the touch. The pads are nicely saturated and offer a formulation of 5% Glycolic Acid, 2% Salicylic Acid, and 5% Lactic Acid. Following Dr. Renata’s advice, I began slowly with the pads an aim to increase use as my skin developed a tolerance. I used the pads about 2 times per week to start.

Moisturize: Intense Hydration

I skipped this vital action throughout my teens and twenties, as I mistakenly reasoned that my excessive oil production provided sufficient moisturization. Unfortunately, I was likely exacerbating my concerns by using overly drying products that destroyed my skin barrier. I felt love at first swipe with Dr. Renata’s Intense Hydration moisturizer. The feel was silky smooth, and my skin absorbed the hydration without leaving me feeling oily. I apply this moisturizer morning and night.

Trusting the Timing

The night I began my new skincare routine, I remember studying the information on the labels as if I were trying to read about my future. “What will happen? How long before I see results?” I wondered. Why was I feeling so impatient? After all, I had waited this long to finally receive specialized advice on how to best care for my skin. Now that I had Dr. Renata’s tailored recommendations, I calmed myself and remembered that I did not need to wish for instant outcomes. The real value would be found in the longevity in the positive results that awaited me. As the weeks have gone on, each day seems to bring noticeable progress. Overall, my skin feels softer, better hydrated, and the exfoliation is helping to provide clarity. This process has cemented my belief that I need to trust in timing. With consistency, high-quality products, and expert advice, I am finally on my way to achieve the healthy, glowing skin that I have always dreamed of.

There’s no question, my afternoon with Dr. Renata was certainly time well spent.
